Aqua Pasifika is a direct result of the successful Green Prescription Pacific Healthy Lifestyle 10 week programme. Feedback from participants attending the programme enjoyed the aqua-session so much that they were keen to continue with pool activities. With support from Compass Health Care Network PHO, WELLHEALTH PHO and Wellington City Council the Aqua Pasifika programme was launched. The class is a 40 minute session of cardio-vascular, strength and flexibility training with a yoga approach in the water. Aqua-pasifika is located in the quieter, warmer and more private hydrotherapy pool and caters for participants with a range of medical conditions including - diabetes, heart problems and weight issues. |

Wendy Hopgood a participant says "A lot of people can feel uncomfortable about their size". "This is a brilliant idea, the pool is private and not too deep so no problem if you cannot swim. Its accessible with a ramp and its good on the joints" she said. Sam Hunter-Siu a regular to the aqua session said "my walking has improved - I now run in the water"! Louise Curtis, Green Prescription Patient Support and Aqua instructor said "Six of the group are going to come to my other aqua classes as they are really keen to get more active"! "It has been great to see a dramatic change from when I first started teaching the class in May. The growth in confidence has been incredible. 90% of the participants were not confident enough to lift their feet off the floor when holding a noodle or bar, now the majority of them are floating along nicely. It's been empowering to see the change" she said. The cost to attend the weekly session is $1.70 and places are limited so participants will need to register. |
