The Vision
“World leading community sport coaching
at the heart of a sporting nation”
We have three key areas of work in the community coach area:
1. FOUNDATION COACHING COMMUNITY
Getting started in coaching - Generic Entry Level Coaching Courses (GELCC) for all.Sport Wellington has allocated funding through the investment by KiwiSport to provide generic entry level coaching courses to the greater Wellington Region to address issues identified by the wellington sporting community i.e the lack of trained or qualified coaches available; lack of opportunities to attend courses and gain qualifications. Sport Wellington co ordinates the delivery of the courses by contracting approved sports to deliver components of their entry level coaching courses. |

Logan Brown Coach of the Month
Sport Wellington manages a volunteer recognition programme where each month sports are encouraged to nominate a volunteer for either the coach of the month or volunteer of the month award. The programme is about recognising the vital role volunteers play in the delivery of sport within our communities and encouraging sporting organisations to value recognition of their volunteers.
|
2. DEVELOPMENT COACHING COMMUNITY
Coach ForcePulls together the power of sports organisations, community funding bodies and Sport NZ to give more New Zealanders a great coaching experience. |
3. PERFORMANCE COACHING COMMUNITY
Reaching for the Podium
Sport Wellington, through the windup of the NZ Academy of Sport Central Region, has allocated funding for the design of a talent development system for Regional Sporting Organisations (RSO) in the Wellington region. The programme will support a RSO that is aligned to its NSO talent development programme to develop a regional talent development programme with the aim of developing identified talented athletes into their sport s high performance programmes. Funding will be managed by Sport Wellington. It will be used, in consultation with High Performance Sport NZ (HPSNZ), Sport NSO to “close the gaps” in capability requirements for the RSO talent development programme. This could include programme design, coaching capability, testing and tracking programme, training environment analysis. |
Coaching for Performance - Communities of PracticeSport Wellington has developed a programme called "Communities of Practice" where we provide a forum to bring (in this case, coaches who coach at the performance and high performance community) together to deepen their knowledge and expertise. Ultimately the sessions aim to: enhance coaches’ knowledge and understanding; complement their weaknesses; to challenge their beliefs, views and ideas. In 2013 it is planned to extend this programme to the development coaching community.
