Coaching Communities are a stage-based conceptual tool to help coaches understand and cater for the individual needs of participants based on the stages in the Sport New Zealand Participation Pathway.

1. FOUNDATION COACHING COMMUNITY

Coaches in the Foundation Coaching Community are coaching athletes in the LEARN STAGE. These athletes are enjoying their first organised sport experiences - eg:

•   Primary school students receiving sport exposure visits

•   Primary school organised sport and PE

•   Club based junior sport (modified programmes)

•   After school programmes

•   School holiday programmes

Sport Wellington support these coaches through the delivery of the Getting Started in Coaching Course.

2. DEVELOPMENT COACHING COMMUNITY

Development coaches support a wider range of participants including:

•   The children who continue in organised sport through the later years of primary school and intermediate school

•   Students taking part in secondary school sport

•   Participants in club youth competitions

•   Non-elite adult participants

3. PERFORMANCE COACHING COMMUNITY

The Performance Coaching Community are coaching a narrower range of athletes who have shown extra ability and have moved to district or regional representation at either a youth or adult level.

•   Regional representatives taking part in national competition
