YOUNG ATHLETES SHINE AT SPORTS AWARDSThe Wairarapa College 1st XI girl’s hockey team reined in the big prize, Harcourts Hamill Realty Sports Person of the Year, at the 2011 AMI Masterton Secondary School Sports Awards, held at Copthorne Hotel & Resort Solway Park on Friday the 4th of November. Event facilitators, Sport Wellington Wairarapa and the local Secondary Schools, Chanel, Kuranui, Makoura, Rathkeale, Solway, St. Matthews and Wairarapa were pleased to see a record number of 64 nominees put forward to contend for the seven categories. The judges, Chris Cogdale, Sam Curtis and Libby Paterson were, however, then given the very onerous and challenging task of having to narrow these many names down to only a select few. A successful crowd of 230 turned up on the night in celebration of the success of this young talent; the accomplishments of whom contributed to our region being described as ‘punching well above our weight’ on the sporting stage. The Wairarapa Bush Secondary Schools Girls Rugby Tens Tournament, Rugby was the winnerA Warriors Grand Final and the All Blacks versus Canada wasn’t enough to keep the 300+ spectators from the Wairarapa Bush Secondary Schools Girls Rugby Tens Tournament held at Makoura College on Sunday. And those who turned up were not let down, with the standard of Rugby proving to be highly skilled and entertaining to match. With our local Eketahuna and Black Fern stars on hand selecting a tournament team, many of the girls showed skills and ability that could one day see them too; don the black jersey. “There are definitely potential Black ferns here today”: said Black Fern Rebecca Mahoney, who also encouraged all present to stick at sport no matter the code. The rugby itself was passion filled and un-compromising and in many respects represented all that is good about ‘grass roots rugby’. The day however belonged to joint tournament winners: Makoura and Wairarapa College Hostel with both teams ending the tournament with 3 wins and 1 loss. Awards are as follows: Wairarapa Bush Secondary Schools Girls Rugby Tens Tournament Champions: Makoura and Wairarapa College Hostel joint winners. Best Forward: Brook Birch (Makoura) Best Back: Sinead Namana (Kuranui) and Gemma Lochead (Tararua) Best Overall: Bailey Peterson (Makoura) Tournament Team: Chelsea Birken-Tipene, Gemma Lochhead (Tararua College) Te Aniwaniwa Huihunganui, Kahu Brown, Chloe Hicks (College House) Sinead Namana, Katrina Terry (Kuranui College) Brooke Birch, Bailey Peterson (Makoura College) Tyler Griffiths (Solway College) |

KI O RAHI, A HIT WITH MAKOURA COLLEGEMakoura College were the sole Wairarapa representative to attend the first ever Ki o Rahi Poneke Festival held on Saturday 1 October at Wakefield Park, Island Bay. The Festival showcased the traditional Maori sport of Ki-o-Rahi, a ball game played in a circular arena which has skills which are transferable to a wide range of large ball games. Event organiser Peter Noanoa said the day was a great success. “It was amazing to see all the rangatahi [young people] taking part and enjoying the game. We aim to build on this and use the event as a spring board to develop the sport in the greater Wellington region.” Makoura were one of six teams of between 10 and 15 players competed in a social tournament, which was won by WhangaNaki, a whanau based team of mixed ages captained by ex-Maori All Black Norm Broughton. Around 300 people participated in total and those who did not take part in the tournament participated in poi making workshops, ‘Poi-lympic’ games and a Town Belt walk Sydney Cunningham Makoura College Team Manager said. “It was a great opportunity for the students. They really enjoyed their day, and the organizers went beyond our expectations and really made us feel welcomed. It was a great way to finish off a unit of lessons we’d been working on at school, and it certainly completed the festivities that were going on at the Wellington Water front to celebrate the WRC.” Elleshia Clarkson one of the participants in the Makoura team said“It was really fun. We had learnt a little bit about Ki o Rahi at school, so it was really good to get out and play other people. We enjoyed getting the goody bags and having the winning team name us as the fairest team. Our Sport coordinator took our team down to the Water front, to look at the WRC celebrations, that was scuts! Great day out. I’d love to do it again.” The event was a part of the REAL New Zealand Festival which runs alongside Rugby World Cup 2011. Visitors to Wakefield Park would have definitely had a taste of the real New Zealand, with an open, friendly and sociable gathering of the diverse cultures of Aotearoa reflecting the spirit of Manaakitanga [hospitality] which underpinned the event. The event also served to highlight the strong partnerships between mainstream and Maori health service providers, and government agencies. Partner organisations who contributed to the event include Kokiri Hauora, Sport Wellington, Wellington City Council, Heart Foundation, Cancer Society, Health Sponsorship Council, Skills Active and Compass Primary Health Care Network.
