Disabilities National Secondary school cross country eventOf particular significance at the recent National Secondary School Cross Country event held in Waikanae Park on Saturday 19 June was the inclusion of an Athletes With Disabilities (AWD) event. "This has not been held before", said Liz Knox, Teacher Manager of the Paraparaumu College Cross Country team.No team members were more proud than the four members of the Paraparaumu College Team, Paul Ashton Janie Martin, Nathan Martin and Matt Dillon. Other schools competing in this inaugural event were. Fielding and New Plymouth Boys High School, Upper Hutt and Rongotai College. Janie Martin who was the first girl across the line after a challenging 2km run will forever be the inaugural record holder.Once she had recovered her breath, she said "it was a great course and I enjoyed the hills" |

Three from Kāpiti announced in the Para Cycling teamThis time it is good things that come in threes. Parafed NZ have just announced that Paula Tesoriero (who grew up on the Kāpiti Coast), Jayne Parsons and Samantha Eddie have made the team to go to the Para Cycling World Champion in Canada in August. Eddie, who is presently ranked second in the world, competes in the Hand Cycling event, Parsons in the Tandem bike section and Tesoriero in the LC3 section for people with artificial limbs. |

swimming lessons for free
Forty Otaki children benefitted from the passion about teaching swimming of Kimra Stephens manager of the Ōtaki CLM Swim Magic programme. Working at the Otaki Pool, Kimra knew there were many young people who were missing out on learning to swim. "The schools do the best that they can" said Kimra "but swimming is a complicated physical skill both to teach and to learn" Fired with her passion to fix the situation Kimra worked with the Women's Community group for the funds, Birthright Liz Pairama Mu Community worker and Sport Wellington Kapiti to fix the situation. Forty children were enrolled in the programme that ran these holidays - these lessons followed on from ones in the Christmas holidays. |
