Active Post Small Sticks in Schools (Hockey)

Small Sticks is a school based programme for New Zealand children aged 4 ¬to 13, which introduces children to the sport of hockey at the level commensurate with their ability. It develops basic fundamental skills while also introducing hockey specific skills in the appropriate setting and with the Hockey New Zealand recommended game format.
• Four coaching sessions per class delivered by an accredited coach
• A teacher in service training session to familiarise teachers with the basic skills of hockey
• A festival day at the completion of the programme
• A school resource kit, including 30 sticks and 30 balls (valued at $1,400), and coaching resources to keep in your school
• Marketing material to help engage and inform students and their parents

Wellington Hockey aims to provide new opportunities for secondary school students to participate in two new competition formats during school lunchtimes and after-school, Hockey 5s and Renegade. In addition, umpire training courses each year will be provided to support the delivery of intra school Renegade/ Hockey 5’s competitions.

Small Sticks is a Hockey New Zealand participation programme designed to attract children aged 4-13 into hockey and help them develop a lifelong love of the sport. The Small Sticks programme includes progressive development modules and lets children play at a level suitable to their ability in a fun and interactive environment. Quality delivery from trained coach, teacher training, in school resources including teachers manual, hockey sticks and balls.

Shuttle Time is an innovative programme aimed at getting kids in schools active and learning to play badminton. Sessions are aimed at ages 6 - 18. Shuttle Time is a Badminton World Federation coaching initiative that is broken down into 3 levels, bronze, silver and gold. This encompasses fundamental skills to create a pathway for player development and learning.

The aim of this project is to enhance the quantity and quality of schoolgirls playing and experiencing cricket while ensuring adequate coach & teacher training for long term sustainability. It focuses include Super Star Cricket, Active Post Tournaments, club registrations and zone teams.

Superstar Cricket is an entry level game, best suited to boys and girls from 5-12 years old, and designed to help participants learn the basics of cricket in an enjoyable and exciting environment. It’s an inclusive, made-for-age game and its benefits extend far beyond the game of cricket. At its core Superstar Cricket provides children with opportunities to experience the value of team-work and active cooperation in a supportive and non-competitive framework. It creates an action-packed, fun atmosphere in which each participant feels fully involved.

Tennis Hot Shots is the national starter tennis programme for New Zealand children. The programme offers a holistic experience for children wanting to get involved in tennis and consists of four pillars: Schools, Coaches, Community and Competitions. 

The introduction of tennis leagues aims to grow the game of tennis by gaining and retaining participants and to provide more opportunities for all children, in particular, non-participation children. They offer a low-cost alternative to the current options of learning to play at the local tennis club. The idea is for children to learn the game through playing on a regular basis and continue playing at their local club by supplementing with coaching or regular court usage.

The Wellington Region Fundamental Movement Skill Project aims to increase the skill level of primary aged children across the greater Wellington region which will in turn enable them to participate confidently and effectively in sport throughout life. The project also aims to build the capacity and capability of sports to deliver at the grassroots level, and support the professional development of teachers and volunteers to ensure sustainability. A strength of this project is that it brings together schools, sports organisations, councils, providers of sport and communities with a common goal. The Wellington Region KiwiSport Fundamental Movement Skills Project provides opportunities for primary schools to participate in programmes such as: Swimming, Football, moveMprove and Get Set Go.

The main purpose of the Primary Sport Wellington Expansion Project is to provide all areas of the Wellington Region with consistent, high quality coordination for school sports via the establishment of a primary school sports coordinator position. Sport Wellington via KiwiSport currently funds primary school sports coordinator positions for the following school clusters: Hutt Southern, Hutt Western, Lower Hutt Primary School Sports Association, Masterton, South Wairarapa and Otaki-Kapiti.
