Small Sticks is a school based programme for New Zealand children aged 4 ¬to 13, which introduces children to the sport of hockey at the level commensurate with their ability. It develops basic fundamental skills while also introducing hockey specific skills in the appropriate setting and with the Hockey New Zealand recommended game format.
• Four coaching sessions per class delivered by an accredited coach
• A teacher in service training session to familiarise teachers with the basic skills of hockey
• A festival day at the completion of the programme
• A school resource kit, including 30 sticks and 30 balls (valued at $1,400), and coaching resources to keep in your school 
• Marketing material to help engage and inform students and their parents

Restrictions: Secondary school aged children  

A new style of hockey which is called Renegade Hockey, allows schools without the proper facilities and equipment to involve and engage students of all skill and ages in hockey.  This style of hockey can be played on all types of surfaces and includes modified hockey sticks and balls making the game a lot faster paced. This version of hockey is a 5-aside format with a lot less rules to help with the flow of hockey and to keep the game fun and engaging.

This type of hockey does not come with any cost to your school or students and allows you access to the following services:

  • 2 introduction coaching sessions by Wellington Hockey appointed coaches
  • Access to loan equipment from Wellington Hockey at no cost to help set up
  • The ability to incorporate this sport during students free time and curriculum time and to encourage interclass and school competitions

The aim of this project is to enhance the quantity and quality of schoolgirls playing and experiencing cricket while ensuring adequate coach & teacher training for long term sustainability. It focuses include Super Star Cricket, New Zealand Post Primary School Tournaments, club registrations and zone teams.

Superstar Cricket is an entry level programme, best suited to boys and girls from 5-14 years old, and designed to help participants learn the basics of cricket in an enjoyable and exciting environment. It’s an inclusive, made-for-age game and its benefits extend far beyond the game of cricket. At its core Superstar Cricket provides children with opportunities to experience the value of team-work and active cooperation in a supportive and non-competitive framework. It creates an action-packed, fun atmosphere in which each participant feels fully involved.

This program is delivered with support from KiwiSport and Sport Wellington. Kiwi Hoops provides fun and enjoyable learning and participation games for young people from 5 to 13 years of age. Kiwi Hoops is part of BBNZ’s Player Development Programme and focuses on teaching fundamental movement and ball skills through modified games.

We base our programme at ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie, but go to other venues and facilities around the region depending upon the activity.

We also have teams entered into the Round the Bays, Weet-bix Try, and Junior Disability Games.

This programme is designed for young people with physical disabilities to experience a range of sport and recreation opportunities in the Wellington Region.  We welcome siblings, parents, grandparents and friends to come and join in. 

Our Youth Group is for 5 – 18 year olds. Parafed Welington, facilitating sport and recreation for young people with physical disabiliites in the Wellington Region. Our Youth Group has been designed so young people can experience a range of opportunities in different sports, recreation and leisure activities.
Through our Youth Group we aim to provide pathways to sport, opportunities to compete at regional and national levels, social networks for our young members and their families, and improve disability awareness within sport. Many of our programmes we undertake ourselves or other disability sport providers. Some are integrated with mainstream sports. Some are just plain good fun! We have partnerships other sports organisations to assist our Youth Group. All family members are most welcome.

The Wellington Region Fundamental Movement Skill Project aims to increase the skill level of primary aged children across the greater Wellington region which will in turn enable them to participate confidently and effectively in sport throughout life. The project also aims to build the capacity and capability of sports to deliver at the grassroots level, and support the professional development of teachers and volunteers to ensure sustainability. A strength of this project is that it brings together schools, sports organisations, councils, providers of sport and communities with a common goal. The Wellington Region KiwiSport Fundamental Movement Skills Project provides opportunities for primary schools to participate in programmes such as: Swimming, Football, moveMprove and Get Set Go.

Getting Started in Coaching aims to provide greater accessibility to generic coaching courses currently being delivered by sport to parents, students and volunteers with an interest in coaching. The courses have been evaluated by Sport Wellington as covering the basics of coaching and providing participants with essential coaching skills and confidence. The courses that are endorsed are non-sport specific and coordinated to be run throughout the year and across the greater Wellington region.
