Disabled Sports Expo ~ Saturday 23 February (10am-2pm)

Parafed Wellington is hosting a  Disabled Sports Expo at the ASB Sports Centre, Kilbirnie, Wellington

Saturday 23 February (10am - 2pm)

Our aims for the Expo are:

    1. to provide an opportunity for physically disabled people in Wellington to come and find out what sport and recreation opportunities are available for them in the Wellington Region
    2. to showcase what opportunities and activities are currently provided by Wellington sports groups and organisation which accommodate physically disable (this is where we think you can help us)
    3. to enable those people interested in physically disabled sport to meet with other likeminded people
    4. to provide a forum for those sports clubs and groups who don't know how to accommodate physically disabled into their activities to come and talk with those groups who have been successful in integrating our requirements

We want to make it as active and dynamic as possible so we will be showcasing Wheelchair Rugby and Wheelchair Basketball - including some of our National representatives from the Wellington Region playing exhibition games during the Expo.  We will also be having equipment available for people to try.

We would like you to be part of this Expo to showcase your sport and recreation opportunities - bring equipment along people can try - bring information on your organisation - bring an open mind and a fun sense of humour.

There is NO COST involved in being part of this Expo.

This is not a Trade Show, so we will not be having suppliers and commerical exhibitors at the Expo.

We also invite you to forward this invitation to other organisations so we can spread the word on what we are doing.

Please feel free to contact us about the Expo, but we will be back in touch with you in the early new year to confirm your involvement as an exhibitor, supporter and participant in this event.

Sport Wellington is saddened to hear the news about Wellington and NZ rugby great, Graham Williams' passing. Graham was inducted as a Sports Legend of Wellington in 2011 by Sport Wellington, this article is a great snapshot of how Graham played the game and lived his life.

Wellington Phoenix FC have provided a great example of what quality volunteer recognition looks like. Longstanding volunteer, Ken Allen, was celebrated by the club after his volunteering with the Nix came to an end over the weekend. Ken has been volunteering his time on match-days for the past 11 years since the franchise was formed. Volunteers like to feel that the organisation they work at values the work they do. Saying thanks is a simple way to acknowledge volunteers and will lead to better retention and even recruitment. A variety of volunteering resources are available on the Sport Wellington website. www.sportwellington.org.nz/volunteers

Congratulations to the The Exercise Studio Silverstream for becoming the first Approved Strength and Balance programme in the Greater Wellington region. They have met the nationally approved evidence based criteria that shows this class will help people keep strong and independent. The class is a circuit class for seniors (60+) focusing on strength, balance and coordination. If other exercise providers or volunteers would like to be involved in this project, please check out the information we have on our Sport Wellington website. www.sportwellington.org.nz/community-strength-and-balance/

Congratulations to the Wellington marching teams for taking out first place in all grades at the North Island Marching Championships held in Wellington over the weekend!

Happy International Volunteer Day! International Volunteer Day (IV Day) is a United Nations led initiative that offers an opportunity for volunteer organizations and individual volunteers to make their contributions visible. One billion people volunteer around the world, all giving their time and skills to improve communities, save lives, fix things that are broken, and bring people together. The work of volunteers across all sport and recreation is a big part of this global movement of volunteers, and has major impact on the wider community. More and more, their work is playing a crucial role in the successes of our sport organisations. So please take the time on IV Day to recognise your volunteers for their work and the impact their work has on your organisation.

Sport Wellington recently hosted a leadership workshop which was attended by national and regional leaders from the sport and recreation sector. This was the first workshop to come from the leadership framework that Sport New Zealand, Sport Wellington and the sector have been jointly developing over the past 20 months. The focus was on 'leading my organisation' and 'leading others' and also provided an excellent opportunity for the various sport and recreation participants to network. The learnings from this ‘pilot’ will be included in the other four settings of leadership (leading self - leading teams - leading leaders - governing organisations). The full leadership system will be incrementally rolled out in 2018 and made available to the sport and recreation sector.

It was an absolute privilege to have Olympic gold medalist and current Supreme Halberg winner Lisa Carrington - Athlete share her experiences and insights with young Wellington athletes on the Pathway to Podium and Wellington City Council Sports Talent Development programmes. Contributing to society in a positive way and being a ‘better person’ is very important to Lisa, and she encouraged that this be top of the list for all athletes. This was the fourth seminar held this year as part of the two programmes, both managed by the Sport Wellington Performance Hub.
