Wairarapa Inter-Collegiate Athletics

Long Standing Records Fall
The Wairarapa Inter-Collegiate Athletics, a major fixture on the College sporting calendar, was held at Kuranui College on Wednesday, 3rd March.  Athletes from all eight Wairarapa Colleges took part in both Track and Field events.

The highlights of the event are the 4 x 100m relays and this year was no exception.  All Colleges taking part in the relays compete for the coveted "Jim McKenzie Memorial Trophy".  The honours this year went to Wairarapa College Girls.  However, there was a much tighter tussle to find the Boys champion with final honours going to Wairarapa College Boys, beating out Makoura by 1 point.

It was also in the Girls Relays where one of the longest standing records fell to the very slick Wairarapa College Intermediate Girls squad consisting of Molly Creagh, April Campbell, Stevie Paine and Laura McKenna, setting a record breaking time of 50.74s, beating the existing record by 1.5 seconds which was set 26 years ago in 1984.

Also to fall was the Senior Girls Discus record which stood for 45 years.  Courtney Fafeita from Wairarapa College, broke the existing record by 6.36m, setting the new record at 39.90m.

Other records to fall on the day were also in throwing events.  Alex Fafeita broke the Intermediate Boys Discus record with a distance of 54.72m.  Alex also set a record in the Intermediate Boys Shot with a throw of 14.99m.

Jerry Peseta also from Wairarapa College threw 14.70m to set a new record in the Senior Boys Shot.

A squad of 100 athletes have been selected from this event to represent the Wairarapa region at the Wellington Secondary Schools Champs to be held on Tuesday, 9 March at Newtown.
