Interview with Amy May - Wellington Round the Bays Volunteer

22 June 2020

When she’s not studying for her Psychology honours, tutoring at Victoria University or tramping, Amy May is a volunteer. Amy is a Wellington local who enjoys the outdoors and has volunteered at Wellington Round the Bays for the last four years. Find out why Amy volunteers and her experience at Wellington Round the Bays below.

What is your volunteering background and how did you start?

Wellington Round the Bays was the first event I ever volunteered at, I was introduced through my manager at Vic Rescue, where I was also volunteering at the time. My manager was volunteering in the Comms office for that year and asked if anyone would like to help at the event, it sounded like fun, so I volunteered. That was back in 2017 and I have since volunteered at every Wellington Round the Bays event since.

What roles have you had over the last four years?

2017 – Assisting in the Comms office on Kilbirnie Park

2018 – Assistant Zone Manager at Kilbirnie Park

2019 & 2020 – Manager for Zone 6 - Half Marathon turnaround point

Do you have a highlight from volunteering over the last four years?

I have enjoyed being at the turnaround point to see runners glad they are heading back towards the finish line! It’s also great to see my friends participating and supporting them. You can see runners get an extra push when volunteers start cheering for them, it’s a great environment to be a part of.

Why do you volunteer?

I do it for the people, the past years volunteering with Wellington Round the Bays I have met different people who are collectively working towards a successful event. I enjoy being able to help and make new friends. I am not an avid runner myself so being able to support those that are and give them some encouragement to keep going is rewarding.
