Coaching for Character
Coaching for Character is a two-year pilot study run by Sport NZ that aims to provide secondary school coaches with tools and resources to intentionally target character development through their coaching.
The programme is guided by Character Development Expert Dr. Ralph Pim. Three Regional Sport Organisations — Sport Wellington, Sport Waikato, and Sport Canterbury — are working with secondary schools to develop their coaches' abilities to coach character through sport.
Five schools in the Wellington Region are participating in the programme:
- Rongotai College
- Scots College
- Wellington College
- Wellington Girls College
- Kuranui College (Wairarapa)
The purpose of the programme is to develop character strengths and promote behaviours in secondary school students that lead to success, happiness, and well-being in sport, school, and life.
"Sport is the perfect venue to teach lessons and promote behaviours that deliver success, greatness and significance in sport, school, and life."
— Ralph L. Pim, Ed.D.
Dr. Pim has spent a life-time learning and understanding how to effectively target character development through sport. As the Character Development Expert Advisor for this pilot programme, he's working closely with Sport NZ and the team here at Sport Wellington to adapt his system to fit the New Zealand secondary school environment.
