2012 Dominion Post Sportsperson of the YearNominations are now closed for the 2012 Dominion Post Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards. Finalists will be announced in the Dominion Post on Friday 25 May. The Awards, now in its 43rd year, serve to acknowledge, promote, and celebrate the contribution that sport makes to the wider Wellington community. Past luminaries who have won the supreme award include Ricki Herbert, Michael Campbell, Martin Crowe, Waimarama Taumaunu and Nick Willis. |

Sports Jam Celebrates 1st BirthdayFunded by KiwiSport through Sport Wellington, Sports Jam is a kid’s sports skills and leadership programme. The programme focuses on the development of fundamental sporting skills within primary and intermediate school children, as well as training and developing senior school student’s sports coaching skills, also enabling them with a chance to earn a coaching qualification in Sport NZ’s ‘Growing Leaders Programme’. Wellington wins at the NZ Sport and Rec AwardsWellington region sports administrators were well represented at the New Zealand Sport and Recreation Awards Dinner in Rotorua, confirming that sport and recreation is in good health in the Capital. Lifetime Achievement awards were presented Sport Wellington's ex CEO Paul Cameron, and to Kapiti based Peter Dale, former Chief Executive of the Hillary Commission now Chair of the New Zealand Community Trust and to cricket veteran and former Sport Wellington Board Member Patricia McKelvey (CNZM, MBE). media release |

Get Set GoOn Thursday 29th March nearly 700 excitable primary school children from around the Wellington region got their first taste of the KiwiSport funded programme ‘Get Set Go’. The hugely successful event was held at Wellington’s new ASB Indoor Sports Centre in association with Sport Wellington, Athletics New Zealand and NZ Post. The Fundamental Movement Skills Project, created by Athletics NZ, led by Leisure Active, with funding from Sport Wellington; aims to increase the foundation skill level and confidence of school-aged children so they can effectively participate in sport. Aotea College Students Lead Through LeagueThe successful KiwiSport funded programme, ‘Leadership Through League’ is delivered by Wellington Rugby League. The programme consists of the college student’s actively encouraging and teaching primary school children across the Porirua region how to play flag league rugby. KiwiSport Manager, Peter Woodman-Aldridge, said 'this is the second year Leadership through League has been funded and we are thrilled with the success of the programme so far'. Schools Have a Go Surfing DaySix lucky primary schools were given the opportunity to participate in Sport Wellington’s KiwiSport funded programme ‘Have a Go Surfing Day’, run by Surfing NZ. Over 150 enthusiastic primary school children took part in the taster sessions held at the popular surfing beach, Lyall Bay. The ‘Have a Go Surfing Day’ aims to use the surfing programme as part of the school sporting curriculum to help increase the participation of children at a grass roots level. KiwiSport Manager, Peter Woodman-Aldridge said ‘we are delighted to be able to assist Surfing NZ with this programme as it’s a fantastic way to get kids involved in alternative sporting opportunities. Fun with Fundamentals Movement Skills (FMS)Three kindergartens in the Lower Hutt area; Maungaraki, Epuni and Dyer St Kindergartens have all taken part in the Sport Wellington FMS Project. This project looks at the importance and development of Fundamental movement Skills (FMS) in under 5’s. Sport Wellington’s Young Person Advisor says ‘the skills which they learn at kindergarten are applied more fully when the children start primary school, as they help aide physical and cognitive development.” Media Release |
